Word 97′s Automatic Text Features
Have you ever been typing a numbered list in Word, hit Enter, and the next number automatically appeared on the following line — even if you didn’t want that line to be numbered? Have you ever wanted to start a line with a lowercase letter and Word automatically capitalized it? Have you ever tried to type a word and Word changed it, assuming you meant something else? These features were intended to be helpful, but they can end up being a nuisance. If you find them annoying, you don’t have to just live with them — Microsoft has made it possible to turn them on or off.
Turn off AutoNumber
Word’s AutoNumber feature can automatically help you with numbered lists. When you begin a paragraph with a number and you hit Enter, Word assumes you want the next line to start with the following number. This can be a handy time-saver if it works out the way you need it to. If you find this feature is more of an annoyance to you than a help, however, you can turn it off by selecting AutoCorrect from the Tools menu. The AutoCorrect dialog box appears with what looks like file folder tabs at the top. Click the AutoFormat As You Type tab and uncheck the “Automatic numbered lists” check box. Word no longer numbers your lists for you.
Temporarily turn off AutoNumber
If you only want to interrupt the automatic numbered list feature temporarily, the easiest thing to do is to use the Numbering icon. This icon looks like a small numbered list and resides on the right side of the Formatting toolbar. If Word places a number where you do not need one, simply click this icon and the number disappears. When you want numbering to begin again, click the Numbering icon and your numbering picks up where it left off.
Replace as you type entries
At the center of the AutoCorrect dialog box is a long list of “Replace text as you type” entries. You can peruse this list to find items Word considers typos, or replaceable items. If something on that list keeps tripping you up, you can select it and then click the Delete button. After the entry is deleted, Word will never “fix” that item for you again.
