How many divorced couples do you know? Probably quite a few. And how many of them were remarried when their scrumptiously cute twin daughters plotted to get their parents’ new lovers out of the way to make them fall in love all over again?
If you thought “The Parent Trap” was far-fetched in 1961 when Disney first produced the film, just take a look at U.S. divorce rates today.
According to the National Center for Health Statistics — yes, that’s who keeps track — there were 414,000 divorces in 1961 and 1,150,000 in 1996, the most recent year for which data are available.
Perhaps the company decided that a film in which the parents share custody and Mommy and Daddy act like grown-ups just wouldn’t be realistic enough to draw a crowd.
