John Edward III

Here is his story:

I went into labor with Johnny on a Friday nite. My husband, John, and I went to the hospital, but they sent us home. I had pretty strong contractions all day Saturday and probably should have gone to the hospital alot sooner than I did, but I’m pretty stubborn and was very nervous about the hospital setting. I hate needles so much! We had taken The Bradley Method classes and our plan was to give birth drug free, that’s right – no epidural either. But, after two days of labor and Johnny getting right on my sciatic nerve I just couldn’t take it anymore. I got the epidural at 5AM on Sunday morning. Our doctor said it was either that or a C-section because I was getting so tired, so I opted for the lesser of the two evils – the epidural (LOL). After I received the epidural, my labor completely stopped, which can happen when you get the epidural. Our nurse wanted me to take pitocin to help start labor again, but we decided to hold off as long as possible. They gave me 45 minutes. At the end of th e 45 minutes, my labor still hadn’t started up again, so we had to consent to the pitocin, but we told them to give me the smallest doseage possible. The little bit that they gave me did the trick and my labor kicked right back up. A couple hours after receiving the pitocin the nurse wanted to put an internal monitor on Johnny’s head. We were really against that because we didn’t want to cause Johnny any pain, but they said that they had some concerns and once he dropped further down, they would not be able to track his heart rate, so we consented. I cried when they did it because Johnny kicked really hard as they screwed it in, so I knew it was hurting him. I am so thankful that we used the monitor though! As I was pushing Johnny out, his heart rate dropped to about 50 beats per minute. That scared us alot! My doctor said that I needed to push him out with the next couple of pushes or she was going to have to use the vacuum to get him out. So, I pushed as hard as I could and out his head came. We discovered what the problem was – Johnny’s umbilical cord had become wrapped around his head two times! The doctor unwrapped it and he started breathing.

At 12:20 Sun afternoon on March, 28, our beautiful little Johnny was born. He was perfect! He did have a little fluid in his lungs, so they had to make sure he stayed crying. It was so cute tho’ because the nurses were trying to make him cry and there was his daddy saying, “It’s ok sweetie, daddy’s here, you can stop crying”. Needless to say, he got talked to for that one! LOL The nurses gave him a 9.9 for his 5 minute Apgarscore, which is great – especially since the cord had wrapped around his neck like it did! I was upset because I didn’t get to even see him for 40 minutes after he was born. I tore pretty bad when he came out, so the doctor was busy trying to stitch me up. In the end, I came away with almost 30 stitches! OUCHIE! But, John was with Johnny the entire time, so that was good. After giving in and having the epidural, I have to say that I am sooooooooo grateful that I had it! I do intend to have it with any other children that we may have. Sorry! But, I figure, why suffer if I don’t have to. The epidural itself really doesn’t affect the baby, it’s the cheap drugs that they sometimes give along with it that is so bad (IMHO). So, I just don’t have the drugs. I’ll be the first to say it – I’m a huge wimp!

I hope you enjoyed reading Johnny’s birth story. It was an experience that I will never forget and I thank God everyday for entrusting me with a son! He is truly a gift from our Heavenly Father!
